More Than Just A Backyard Brawl

February 23, 2011

Today is one of those days that holds a special place in all of our hearts.  It’s the day where the most hated of all rivals, the Hoopies Mountaineers of West Virginia, come to town for the basketball version of the Backyard Brawl.  It’s already the second meeting of the season between the two teams (what a novel concept, playing teams in your conference twice in a home & home), but it won’t be any less exciting…the way rivalries should be.

The Panthers have more to prove than just winning this a game against the Mountaineers for a second time.  Coming off their one point (possibly referee decided) loss to St. Johns, some coaches thought it would be a great idea to vote them down from 4th to 6th in their poll, despite having the best resume of any team out there.  From the reaction on Twitter, it sounds like fans are taking this drop personally.  It sounds like some of the Panthers took notice as well and are taking it personally…

Not sure if Ashton Gibbs is really the guy you want to disrespect and get fired up.  Not sure if you want to be the team playing Ashton Gibbs when he is then pissed off.  We’re sure many of the other guys on the team feel the same way he does.  Fortunately, West Virginia just happens to be the team that gets to face them tonight.  It should be fun, it always is.  Let’s beat some Hoopies!

Hail to Pitt!
