Doug Gottlieb's Logic (Part 1 of n)

February 14, 2011

Welcome to a new, semi-regular feature of ours that we like to call “Doug Gottlieb’s Logic”, where we analyze Doug Gottlieb’s comments on how teams are better than Pitt despite Pitt beating them. This week, we will take a look at why Doug thinks Texas (22-3) is better than Pitt (23-2).

Doug is making a couple points here, that Pitt only beat Texas by 2 points on a neutral court, the game was early in the year so Texas was still a young team, and Pitt can’t possibly be good without Ashton Gibbs.  So let’s dig into those points…

For point #1, Doug has gone on record saying that he is impressed with the fact that Texas averages 19 point margins of victory in each conference road win.  Pitt is only averaging 10 point margins of victory in their conference road wins.  Last time I checked a) this isn’t the BCS circa 1998 where running up the score means something to the NCAA selection committee, and b) a win is a win.  Plus, shouldn’t the fact that the BIG EAST is a better overall conference with a higher average RPI and SOS play into the matter?  Not in Doug’s logic.

For points #2 and #3, Doug makes reference to the fact that Texas has improved since November, making the NCAA more of a “what have you done for me lately” league.  He also is saying that Pitt is not better than Texas because Aston Gibbs is not in the lineup right now.  Well how about this for a statistic.  Texas is only 2-2 vs. the RPI Top 25 this season.  Pitt is 6-2 vs. the RPI Top 25 this season.  5 of Pitt’s 6 RPI Top 25 wins came in conference play, while only 1 of Texas’ wins did.  How’s that for “what have you done for me lately”?  Also, Pitt is 2-0 without Ashton Gibbs…and yes, both games @WVU and @Villanova (in The Pavilion no less) count as Top 25 RPI wins.  So Pitt has as many RPI Top 25 wins without Gibbs in the last week as Texas has had all season, and that doesn’t matter?  Not in Doug’s logic.

Well, we would like to thank you for taking the time to dig into the mind of ESPN’s Doug Gottlieb.  We hope you’ll join us next time when Doug tries to say that the Predator is a better predator than Gary McGhee.  Feed Gary.  He’s hungry.  Hail to Pitt.

What have we done lately???? How about go 11-1 in the best conference in the land.

Not only did we beat Texas but they have more losses to big east teams (2: Uconn & Pitt) than Pitt does (1:ND)!!!
