New Coach = New Logo?

December 9, 2010

Maybe it’s just a coincidence, maybe it’s not.  But the firing/resignation of the Wannstache may be a sign by the Athletic Department that a new logo may be on the way.  Bear with us for a moment…

As we all know, for nearly two and a half decades (1973-1996), we had the beloved Script Pitt logo…

But this all changed with the beginning of the 1997 football season, Walt Harris’ first season.  That season we became known as Pittsburgh, changed from “royal blue and gold” to “navy blue and Vegas gold”, and would begin the era of the torch-cut Panther head logo…

This was the primary logo on the uniforms and helmet through Walt’s tenure.  But then Walt went to Stanford, AD Jeff Long brought in a Pitt guy as his next coach.  So it was only fitting for Dave Wannstedt’s teams starting in 2005 that the logo be change to…

So now that the Wannstache is gone…what’s next for Pitt?  Anything new?  Royal blue and gold again? Nike Pro-Combat uniforms?  Dare we say…Script Pitt?
