Gameweek UConn: The More You Know

November 11, 2010

Opponent: UConn Huskies (4-4, 1-2 BIG EAST).

Kickoff: Thursday, November 11th, 7:30pm

Mascot: Jonathan the Husky…the lamest named mascot we have yet to encounter.  Named for the first governor of of Connecticut, Jonathan comes in the real and costumed variety.

Coach: Randy Edsall, a staple of UConn football since 1999.  He is the program’s winningest coach at 69-69, and has often been mentioned for other coaching jobs.  Yet he is still in Storrs…it’s nice to see a coach not jumping ship on the BIG EAST.

Conference: BIG EAST.  The Huskies made the jump to BIG EAST in football a year earlier than anticipated in 2004 when Miami and Virginia Tech defected to the ACC.  UConn was already a member of the BIG EAST in all other sports since it’s inception in 1979.

Series: 3-3-0.  Despite only playing each other for the past six seasons, there is quite a “history” between these schools.  In their first meeting in 2004 and the Huskies’ first BIG EAST home game, Pitt was at the UConn 12 with a 3rd and Goal when one of the most famous plays of Walt Harris’ tenure took place.  The Panthers called a time out so that QB Tyler Palko could slide to the right to center the ball for  FG attempt instead of trying for a TD.  The Panthers lost the game 29-17.  Two years later, the Panthers returned to Rentschler Field only to blow a 14 point lead with less than 8 minutes left in the game.  Pitt would lose in double-OT on a 2-pt conversion with several Wannstaches in attendance, one of the worst losses in the Wannstedt era.  We moved out of the state shortly after.

TV/Radio: We’re back on national TV…and it’s an ESPN Thursday night game!  This is the Panthers 3rd Thursday night game of 4 weeknight games this season.  The only team with more weeknight games is Boise St.  But the best part of this being a ESPN Thursday night game is that Jenn Brown will be roaming the sidelines.  If you don’t have cable, it will also be available on ESPN3.com. If you’re on the go in Pittsburgh, you can also listen to the play-by-play with Billy Hillgrove and Bill Fralic on 93.7 The Fan.

Bloggers: TheUConnBlog.com.  You gotta hand it to these guys, they have to deal with egos like Geno Auriemma and Jim Calhoun, plus they went to school where the closest city is Hartford…and by choice!

Fun Facts: We’ve all seen the commercials during college sporting events for the universities participating in the game.  The ads are obviously designed to attract students to the university, so you would think that they would air well produced ads like this one, right?

However that’s not the case with UConn, who has produced perhaps the worst commercial of all time.  Take a look…

Sorry, but this looks like the video equivalent of a 5 year old’s work hanging on the refrigerator. We guess you could infer your own jokes from that towards UConn…Syracuse’s own HoyaSuxa did here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gcf6Zsi6VXw

Wanny must go, he is stuck in the 80’s and frankly being picked to win the big east 3 years in a row and failing should result in his termination.

They will 1 more game this year, 6-6!
