BREAKING NEWS: Villanova to the Big East?

September 10, 2010

Word coming out of Philadelphia this morning is that if Villanova wants to join the Big East in football, there is a spot there just for them…all they have to do is say yes.

The Philadelphia Daily News is reporting that the Big East has recently asked Villanova to make the jump from FCS and the Colonial Athletic Association to join the conference they are a member of in all other sports.

“The Big East very recently communicated its interest in adding Villanova as a football member,” Villanova athletic director Vince Nicastro told the Daily News yesterday. “As a result, we have decided to embark on an in-depth evaluation of this opportunity.”

Villanova has a lot to figure out, such as if this jump to to a BCS conference makes sense for them and if they can find a stadium to play in (current stadium is too small and Lincoln Financial Field is already used by Temple).

All we know is that it’ll be nice to have a 9th Big East member for a 8-game balanced conference schedule.  In the era of 12-game seasons, there is no reason for a BCS conference team like Pitt to play only 6 home games like this season because they only have 3 scheduled home conference games.
